Bird Demon (Devil) mask, also called “Gurulu Raksha” or “Gurulu Raksha Yak Muhuna” by the local community of Sri Lanka. Gurula represent the bird Eagle. According to folklore Gurulu Raksha is the portrait of a mythical solar bird devouring a snake. This mask generally located or hang above the Snake mask face called Naga. Gurulu is decorated with the enemy snakes as if they were a trophy. According to Hindu and Buddhist mythology, it is said that this bird was the “vehicle” on which Hindu God Vishnu rode. The mask is believed to bring protection and good luck. Based on the artist these masks are crafted colours and the shapes can be slightly different.

Fire Demon (Devil) mask, also called as “Gini Raksha” or “Gini Yak Muhunu” by local community of Sri Lanka. This mask represent the demon of fire who project anger towards all evil in the world. They believe this mask will work as a good luck charm and bring protection to households. Also having possession of this mask will drown off the enemies and, bring friendship and harmony. Another folklore says Gini Raksha mask is representing the emotion of anger which is why it includes colors such as red, orange, and yellow.

According to folklore this mask believed to be a demon lived in ancient Sri Lanka. This traditional mask is part of a culture of dance rituals in Sri Lanka called by the same name, Gara YakaNarthanaya (Gara Demon/Devil Dance). The tradition states that performing this dance can cure the diseases were caused by demons. A person wear this mask and perform this dance in front of people. It is believed that many sicknesses caused by demons and evil spirits will be cured participating this event.
Polychrome wooden dance mask of “Gara Yaka”, hand-carved and hand-painted. The demon has round ears in the form of lotus flowers and two tusks, big bulging eyes and head with three cobra hoods rising from the middle of the forehead. People believe that keeping these masks at home would protect from the evil eye and mouth. Based on the artist, who these masks are crafted colours and the shapes can be slightly different.

The mask with cobra hoods for the head dress and the ears is called “Naga Raksha” or cobra demon. The mask with features of a bird is called Garuda Raksha, the mask with the peacock representation is “Mayura Raksha” (Peacock Demon) and the one with the flames is “Gini Raksha” (Fire Demon).

The Raksha(Demon) Wooden Masks have been used in Traditional Sri Lankan festivals and Cultural dances for decades. On the head of the red mask is a large snake hood, almost covering this are three snake hoods. Some call the Naga Rakshaya, Rathnakuta (red mask). But among different dance troupes Naga Raksha (Snake demon) and Rathnakuta (red mask) have been differently identified and are two different masks. On inquiring into this matter, it has been found that the main snake head on the Naga (snake) mask covered by three snake heads is also present in the Rathnakuta (red mask). Differences can be noted in the earrings attached on both sides of the snake pictures.
